Blacklock Shoreditch – Restaurant Overview
28-30 Rivington St, London EC2A 3DZ, United Kingdom
Blacklock Shoreditch is a well-known London steakhouse located in the Shoreditch neighbourhood of East London. Blacklock has built a strong reputation in the city for serving high-quality British meats, particularly steaks and chops, in a lively and stylish dining environment. While it is often categorized as a steakhouse, the overall experience at Blacklock Shoreditch leans closer to modern fine dining, combining polished service with a strong focus on well-sourced meat and classic cooking techniques.
Shoreditch itself is one of London’s most energetic neighbourhoods. Known for its creative atmosphere, street art, and vibrant nightlife, the area has become a major destination for restaurants and bars. Over the past decade, Shoreditch has developed into a major food hub where diners can find everything from casual street food to high-end restaurants.
Blacklock Shoreditch fits naturally into this environment. The restaurant offers a refined dining experience while still maintaining a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the character of the neighbourhood.
Inside, Blacklock Shoreditch feels stylish and comfortable. The dining room has a polished steakhouse feel with warm lighting and a lively atmosphere. Despite its upscale reputation, the restaurant still feels approachable rather than overly formal.
Service during the visit was very good. The server at Blacklock Shoreditch was friendly and attentive, helping create a relaxed dining experience.
One interesting feature of the restaurant is the blackboard displaying the available meat cuts. The board lists the cuts that are available that day along with the portion sizes in grams. This rotating selection helps highlight the restaurant’s focus on quality meat and allows diners to see exactly what is available before ordering.
However, the board also ended up creating a bit of disappointment during this visit.
One of the main reasons for visiting Blacklock Shoreditch was to order prime rib steak, specifically in the range of around 400 to 600 grams. Unfortunately, when checking the blackboard at the start of the meal, the prime rib was crossed off, indicating that it was unavailable for the day.
Because of that, other steaks were ordered instead.
Later during the meal, however, the board was updated and prime rib was suddenly added back to the list of available cuts. This was disappointing because the order had already been placed by that point. Since the board originally showed the item crossed off, it seemed reasonable to assume that the prime rib was completely unavailable for the rest of the day.
Had it been clear that more cuts might become available later, the order might have been delayed in order to get the prime rib instead.
Since the prime rib was one of the main reasons for visiting Blacklock Shoreditch, that part of the experience was definitely a bit frustrating.
That said, the steaks that were ultimately ordered still delivered a very strong meal overall.
Would return? Yes.
Beef Dripping Chips

7/10
The beef dripping chips at Blacklock Shoreditch were one of the sides ordered with the steaks.
These chips came with fairly high expectations. Fries cooked in beef dripping often have the potential to be extremely flavourful while also achieving a great level of crispiness.
At first glance, the chips looked very promising. The surface had a rough texture that suggested they might be very crispy.
Those rough edges can often help fries develop a better crust during cooking, which typically leads to a more satisfying crunch.
Unfortunately, the chips from Blacklock Shoreditch didn’t quite reach the level of crispiness that was expected.
While they did have some crisp areas, the overall texture wasn’t as crunchy as it could have been.
The rough texture did help somewhat, giving parts of the chips a little extra crispness, but overall they still leaned slightly softer than ideal.
Despite that, the chips from Blacklock Shoreditch were still enjoyable. The flavour was good and they worked well alongside the steaks.
They simply fell a bit short of the high expectations that come with beef dripping fries.
Order again? No.
Rib Eye Steak

8.5/10
The rib eye steak at Blacklock Shoreditch was easily the highlight of the meal.
It was cooked to a perfect medium rare, which allowed the natural flavour and tenderness of the beef to stand out.
One of the best aspects of the rib eye from Blacklock Shoreditch was the texture. The steak was extremely tender, making each bite very enjoyable. Rib eye naturally contains more fat than some other cuts, and that fat contributes to both flavour and tenderness.
That richness was very noticeable in the steak.
The seasoning on the rib eye was also excellent. It enhanced the natural flavour of the beef without overpowering it, which is exactly what you want from a well-prepared steak.
Everything about the rib eye felt balanced—from the cooking temperature to the seasoning and overall tenderness.
In fact, one of the biggest regrets from the meal was simply not ordering more of it.
It was a fantastic steak and definitely the standout item of the visit.
Order again? Yes.
Sirloin Steak

7.5/10
The sirloin steak at Blacklock Shoreditch was another strong dish, though it didn’t quite reach the same level as the rib eye.
Sirloin is naturally leaner than rib eye, meaning it usually contains less fat and therefore tends to be slightly less tender. That difference was noticeable here.
The sirloin from Blacklock Shoreditch was not quite as tender as the rib eye, but it was still very good overall.
Just like the rib eye, the steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, which helped preserve the natural juiciness of the meat.
The flavour was excellent as well. Even without the extra fat found in rib eye, the steak still delivered a strong beef flavour and satisfying texture.
In fact, the sirloin from Blacklock Shoreditch was likely one of the better sirloin steaks I’ve had.
It may not have had the same richness as the rib eye, but it was still a very enjoyable steak.
Order again? Yes.
Atmosphere & Dining Experience
One of the strengths of Blacklock Shoreditch is the overall dining experience.
The restaurant manages to balance a refined steakhouse atmosphere with a welcoming and lively environment. It feels upscale enough to qualify as a fine dining steakhouse, but not so formal that it becomes intimidating.
The use of the blackboard listing available cuts also adds a bit of character to the restaurant. It highlights the restaurant’s focus on meat and helps create a sense that the offerings change based on availability.
The main issue during the visit was simply the timing of the prime rib availability. Seeing the item added to the board after already ordering was frustrating, especially since that cut was one of the main reasons for choosing Blacklock Shoreditch.
Still, aside from that moment, the service itself was friendly and professional throughout the meal.
Final Thoughts
Blacklock Shoreditch delivers a strong steakhouse experience in one of London’s most vibrant dining neighbourhoods.
The rib eye steak at Blacklock Shoreditch was excellent—perfectly cooked, extremely tender, and very flavourful. The sirloin steak at Blacklock Shoreditch was also very good, offering great flavour and a properly cooked medium rare finish.
The beef dripping chips at Blacklock Shoreditch were decent but didn’t quite reach the crispiness that was expected given their promising appearance.
The biggest disappointment of the visit was the situation with the prime rib availability. Since the cut was crossed off the board when ordering, it seemed unavailable for the day. Seeing it appear later on the board after already placing the order was frustrating, especially since that was one of the main reasons for visiting the restaurant.
Even with that issue, the steaks themselves were very good and showed why Blacklock has built such a strong reputation in London’s steakhouse scene.
If you’re visiting Shoreditch and looking for a high-quality steakhouse, Blacklock Shoreditch is still a strong option—just keep an eye on that blackboard before placing your order.
