District Deli Overview
220 Carruthers Ave, Ottawa, ON K1Y 1N8
District Deli is one of my favourite sandwich shops in Ottawa and a place I genuinely look forward to visiting. It opened relatively recently compared to many long-standing delis in the city, but it has quickly built a strong reputation for doing one thing very well: big, flavourful sandwiches that feel worth the price.
The shop has a casual, no-frills setup, focused entirely on the food rather than atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you come in knowing exactly what you want, order at the counter, and leave with a sandwich that feels heavy in the best possible way. Portions here are generous, and it’s one of the few sandwich spots where I consistently feel like I’m getting excellent value for what I’m paying.
What really stands out is how packed the sandwiches are. They don’t skimp on meats, cheeses, or toppings, and every sandwich feels thoughtfully assembled rather than thrown together. After multiple visits, I’m still excited to work my way through the rest of the menu.

The Wellington is a fantastic sandwich and easily one of the reasons District Deli has become a go-to spot for me. It’s stacked with mortadella, hot genoa, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella, along with lettuce, roasted red pepper, pickled red onion, basil mayo, and vinaigrette.
From the first bite, it’s clear this sandwich is well balanced and generously filled. The mortadella is the star for me — savoury, slightly fatty, and incredibly satisfying. Combined with the prosciutto and hot genoa, you get layers of flavour without anything overpowering the rest.
The fresh mozzarella adds a creamy element, while the roasted red peppers and pickled red onions bring acidity and sweetness that cut through the richness of the meats. The basil mayo and vinaigrette tie everything together nicely, giving the sandwich moisture and brightness without making it soggy.
It’s a filling, flavourful sandwich that feels complete from start to finish. Easily one of my favourite sandwiches in Ottawa, and one I’d order again without hesitation.
The Holland
Menu description: roast beef, provolone, lettuce, pickles, red onion, creamy horseradish, mustard.

The Holland features roast beef, provolone, lettuce, pickles, red onion, creamy horseradish, and mustard. While it’s still a well-made sandwich, it didn’t hit the same highs for me as the Wellington.
The main issue was the creamy horseradish, which had a very strong kick. If you’re a big horseradish fan, this might be a plus, but for me, it was a bit too dominant. The sharpness of the horseradish took away from enjoying the roast beef and provolone, which felt more like background elements rather than the focus.
That said, the sandwich was still well packed, and the ingredients were fresh and good quality. It’s not a bad sandwich by any means — it just didn’t align with my personal preferences, especially when compared to how much I enjoyed the Wellington.
I wouldn’t order this specific sandwich again anytime soon, but that’s more a reflection of taste than execution.
Final Thoughts
District Deli is a standout sandwich shop in Ottawa. The portions are generous, the flavours are bold, and the sandwiches consistently feel worth the price. It’s rare to leave a sandwich shop feeling completely satisfied without wishing you’d ordered more — and District Deli delivers that every time.
The Wellington is a must-order and a perfect example of what they do best: well-balanced, meat-forward sandwiches that don’t cut corners. While The Holland wasn’t my favourite due to the strong horseradish, it was still made with care and quality ingredients.
Overall, this is a place I’ll keep coming back to, especially as I continue working my way through the menu. If you’re looking for one of the best sandwich spots in Ottawa, District Deli is absolutely worth checking out.
