Chesterfields Gastro Pub Restaurant Overview

1300 Wellington St. W, Ottawa, ON K1Y 3A9

Located in Hintonburg, Chesterfields Gastro Pub has earned a strong reputation as one of Ottawa’s most popular brunch destinations — and after visiting, it’s easy to see why. The restaurant is known for its creative menu, friendly staff, and consistently high-quality dishes that show real care from the kitchen.

We visited on a weekday morning, and it wasn’t busy at all, which made for a relaxed experience. However, that’s a stark contrast to weekends, when there are usually long lines to get in. It’s important to note that they don’t take reservations, so if you plan to go on a weekend, arrive early or be prepared to wait.

The staff were very friendly, and the overall atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. Chesterfields strikes that perfect balance between a casual brunch spot and an elevated gastro pub. You can tell the chefs put real effort into each dish, from flavour to presentation. The quality and taste of the food stand out immediately, and it’s clear why it’s become such a Hintonburg favourite.

Would return? Absolutely — already looking forward to it.

Shakshuka

The shakshuka was exactly what I hoped for — rich, well-seasoned, and cooked to perfection. The eggs were soft and runny, blending nicely into the spiced tomato base. The flavour was balanced, with a bit of tang and depth that made it really satisfying.

The sourdough bread that came on the side was decent, though not the best I’ve had — a little less chew and flavour than I prefer. The tomato and cucumber salad was underwhelming and somewhat bland, though it added a touch of freshness to the plate.

Still, the shakshuka itself carried the dish. A comforting, flavourful option that’s great for anyone craving something warm and hearty.

Weekly Special Eggs Benedict

This was the best dish of the meal, and honestly, one of the best eggs benedicts I’ve ever had. It was built on a garlic focaccia base, topped with house meatloaf (a blend of pork, beef, and duck), bacon, and two poached eggs, all covered in a spicy hollandaise sauce, with crispy green peas and red shiso on top.

The focaccia was fantastic — crispy on the outside but soft and airy inside. The hollandaise sauce was outstanding, rich and spicy, easily one of the best versions I’ve ever had. The meatloaf was tender and juicy, adding savoury depth to each bite, and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly, letting the yolk flow through the entire dish.

The bacon added saltiness and texture, and I added avocado on the side, which paired nicely with everything. Each component worked beautifully together, and the whole plate felt thoughtfully constructed. This is the kind of dish that makes you want to come back. Though it’s too bad that this is just a weekly special at Chesterfields Gastro Pub and may not be available the next time I go.

Jerk Benny with Jerk Plantains and Roasted Potatoes

This dish featured jerk chicken served on cornbread with poached eggs, mango salsa, and jerk hollandaise sauce, accompanied by jerk plantains and roasted potatoes.

The cornbread base was a pleasant surprise, as most eggs benedicts use English muffins. The cornbread had a crisp exterior and a soft, fluffy interior, which paired perfectly with the rich hollandaise and runny eggs.

The jerk chicken was well-seasoned, bringing just the right amount of spice, and the hollandaise had a subtle jerk kick that complemented the other flavours. The plantains were cooked perfectly, with a nice caramelized sweetness and a hint of spice, while the roasted potatoes added a hearty touch.

When the poached eggs broke open, the yolk mixed beautifully with the jerk hollandaise, chicken, and cornbread. A creative, flavourful twist on a classic dish.

Steak Hash LeClaire

This dish included beef tenderloin, roasted spuds, red pepper, red onion, cheese curds, and Brussels sprouts, topped with two poached eggs and green goddess dressing, served with a side of sourdough toast.

It sounded great on paper but ended up being just okay. The beef tenderloin was tender but lacked strong seasoning. The Brussels sprouts were slightly undercooked, which affected the texture, and the sourdough toast, like with the shakshuka, was decent but not memorable.

The eggs were cooked perfectly, though, and the combination of runny yolk and the green goddess dressing added some brightness to the dish. Still, compared to the other plates, this one didn’t stand out.

Final Thoughts

Chesterfields Gastro Pub is one of Ottawa’s best brunch spots, hands down. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the kitchen clearly takes pride in every plate. The food is creative, well-prepared, and consistently high quality.

The Weekly Special Eggs Benedict was the clear winner — an incredible combination of textures and flavours, highlighted by one of the best hollandaise sauces I’ve ever had. The Jerk Benny also stood out as a fun and flavourful twist.

Even though some dishes like the Steak Hash LeClaire didn’t quite impress, the overall experience was excellent. Whether you visit on a quiet weekday or brave the lines on the weekend, Chesterfields Gastro Pub is absolutely worth it.
