Baton Rouge Restaurant Overview

270 W Hunt Club Rd, Nepean, ON K2E 1A5

Baton Rouge is a well-known Canadian restaurant chain recognized for its steaks, ribs, and upscale casual dining atmosphere. We visited the Hunt Club location, which is situated in a plaza with plenty of free parking. We had been here a number of times, so we expected it to be pretty good again.

The interior has a dark, classy decor, giving it a slightly formal yet comfortable vibe. The staff were friendly and polite, and the food came out fairly quickly. However, the service at the end of the meal was slow, which left a negative impression.

After we finished eating, it took about 15 minutes before anyone came by to check on us. Another server (not our original one) eventually came to clear the plates, and we asked him for the bill. A few minutes later, our main server returned and asked if we wanted dessert — even though we had already requested the bill. When she finally brought the bill, she left again to get the payment machine instead of bringing it with her. This unnecessary back-and-forth added to the wait and frustration.

Despite the server being pleasant throughout, the slow service during payment felt avoidable. For a chain of this calibre, I expected smoother coordination.

Would return? Not likely.

Order Again? No.

We each ordered the prime rib but for one we asked for fries on the side and the other we asked for mashed potatoes on the side. This was the main reason we chose to come to Baton Rouge – the prime rib. So we were expecting it to be good and also because we heard the prime rib here is good. Unfortunately, it ended up being a major disappointment.

We asked for the steak medium rare and grilled, but it came our rare instead. The texture was tough and chewy, so it lacked the tenderness that we expected from a properly prepared prime rib. Every bite felt like effort, which completely took away from the experience and enjoyment of the prime rib.

We found it quite frustrating that the main part of the meal – the steak – was just a disappointment.

In terms of the fries, they were great. We asked for them to be extra crispy, and they came out exactly as requested. They were these thin-like fries that had a very satisfying crunch and we also received a good portion of fries. This was actually the highlight of the dish itself, which is too bad since this is just a side to the main meal. In any case, we did thoroughly enjoy the fries. Nicely salted and perfectly crisp.

The mashed potatoes were quite good too. They were smooth, creamy, and had a nice buttery flavour. We found them comforting, enjoyable, and a solid pairing with the meal. I wouldn’t say that there was necessarily anything that was particularly unique about them. They were just good mashed potatoes and a nice generous serving of it as well.

From where we were sitting, we actually had full view of another restaurant called Chop Steakhouse and Bar and I was thinking, we should have gone there instead because their prime rib is really good. The next time we’re craving prime rib, Chop is where we’re going to go.

Final Thoughts

Baton Rouge on Hunt Club offered a plesant atmosphere and friendly service, but the experience overall was really disappointing, mainly due to the poorly cooked prime rib and needing to wait a while to receive the bill. For a restaurant that brands itself around quality steaks and ribs, the prime rib should be a standout item, but it really wasn’t and rather, was a disappointment.

The sides were good – the fries were excellent, and the mashed potatoes were solid – but that doesn’t make up for the main dish being tough, undercooked, and overpriced.

What made it worse was the slow service when paying the bill. It made us feel more frustrated than satisfied. When we pay premium prices, we expect a smoother and more enjoyable dining experience from start to finish.

We definitely left the place unsatisfied and have no plans to go back there anytime soon.
